About Digital Storytelling& Photovoice

Everyone Has a Story to Tell!

A Digital Story is a 3-5 minute multimedia film story.  Digital Stories are based on the traditional art of storytelling using modern technology.

Photovoice is a method of using photographs taken and selected by participants to reflect upon and explore emotions and experiences that have guided their chosen images.

Digital story workshops focus on collaborative, experiential learning through individual or group writing and reviewing processes and “learning by doing” through interactive activities using simple, easy to learn video technology.

Photovoice workshops focus on using still images to tell a story.  Narrative may, or may not be part of the photovoice story.

Our Story

Trish Van Katwyk and Catherine Guzik first began working together during the pandemic starting in 2020.  Trish was Catherine's Master of Social Work practicum placement which had to take place virtually due to the COVID lockdown.  Despite living in different continents, they initiated and coordinated an Inuit Youth digital story project in three different Nunavut communities in partnership with local artists and community members.  Three digital stories were produced by the youth.  Trish and Catherine also led a digital story workshop for the One Health companion animal therapy team at the University of Saskatchewan.  See the project page for further details!

Trish and Catherine continued their work together presenting at various conferences and events. Together they published an article in the Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work Journal titled "Using collaborative critical autoethnography to decolonise through “seeing” and doing: Social work, community engagement, and ethical practice"

Kei Lau joined the team in 2023 after working with Trish Van Katwyk on a Digital Storytelling project for a Humanities 101 Course.  She brings extensive knowledge and expertise in social media platforms.
